Жанр:Документальный
Год: 2004
Режиссер:
В ролях: Michel Palin
Сюжет:Hot on the heels of his adventures in the Sahara, Michael Palin takes on the abode of snow and begins a 2000-mile journey across this mighty and majestic region of Asia. Encountering extremes of wealth and poverty, altitude and freezing cold, he once again brings his unique wit, charm and wisdom to each episode. Along the way he encounters, amongst many others, the Dalai Lama, the Bhutanese Royal Family and the once feared head hunting tribe of the Konyak. Whilst on his travels he passes through Afghanistan, across India to the feared Death Zone near the base of Mount Everest and then onto the Bhutanese capital before arriving in the Bay of Bengal. Part 1 - North by Northwest New series. Intrepid traveller Michael Palin embarks on his most challenging adventure yet. His journey through the North West Frontier province of Pakistan, starts on the Khyber Pass and ends five miles from K2 on the Pakistan/China border. From the Khyber, Michael Palin passes through Darra, where they make working facsimiles of every gun on earth. He visits a street dentist in Peshwar but chickens out when he sees the drill. He goes bull racing with a Pakistani aristocrat and is within a horn's tip of being trampled to death, and finally crosses over the Lowari Pass into the buffer state of Chitral. He discovers that Chitral is the birth place of free-style Polo and that in a few days Chitral play the annual needle match with rivals Gilgit on the high Shandur Pass, 3,810 metres. With man and horse fighting for breath in the oxygen starved atmosphere, Michael enjoys a fierce and volatile encounter, very far removed from the polite chukkas at Hurlingham and Cowdray Park. When the match is over the crowds go back down. But Michael heads north to the land of ice and snow in a military helicopter to KT, the second highest mountain in the world. Part 2 - A Passage to India Michael travels from K2 in Pakistan to Ladakh in India. It's a short distance as the crow flies but, due to politics, it has become a huge loop. Since Partition in 1947, India and Pakistan have been at loggerheads. There is only one official crossing point, New Lahore, and to get back into the Indian Himalaya, Michael will have to detour hundreds of miles south before he can get back up north again. The journey covers some memorable locations: The Sikh city of Amritsar, with its Golden Temple; and Shimla, ("Simla" under the British) with its Vice Regal Lodge, Gaiety Theatre, and cosy half-timbered tea-houses. Travelling through Kashmir, Michael spends an uncanny time on a house boat on tranquil Lake Dal in the state capital, Srinagar, which feels like a city under occupation. Michael last appointment is with a God King - the 14th Dalai Lama - at Dharamsala, where the Tibetan government is in exile since it was granted sanctuary in 1960. Before the meeting with His Holiness, Michael visits the Astrological Institute and discovers what he was before he was re-incarnated as Michael Edward Palin in Sheffield in May 1943. Part 3 - Annapurna to Everest During a Gurkha recruitment Michael Palin is disturbed by Maoist insurgents, but survives to really suffer as he climbs up to 15,000 feet and experiences the majesty of Annapurna Sanctuary. In the Nepalese capital Kathmandu he is blessed by the King before meeting holy men by a river where the dead are cremated. Crossing into Tibet he meets his first yaks at the highest monastery in the world, before heading up the Rongbuk glacier towards the summit of Everest. Part 4 - The Roof of the World Leaving Everest Base Camp, Michael Palin takes the high road to Lhasa to observe what effect the Chinese have had on Tibet. From the Potala Palace to the great monasteries of Tashilunpo and Sera, he finds that religion is once again tolerated, while at the same time the old Tibetan centre of the city is being torn down and replaced by modern Chinese shopping malls and nightclubs. Following the pilgrims to the holy Namtso Lake, he finally warms up in an Olympic-sized hot spring before being taught how to milk a yak and make cheese with a nomad family who then travel with him to Yushu's horse festival. Part - 5 Leaping Tigers, Naked Nagas Following the Yangtze along Tiger Leaping Gorge into Yunnan, in South-West China, Michael reaches the easternmost end of the Himalaya. Avoiding a walking marriage with the celebrated Mosuo singer, Namu, he gets a medical check-up with Dr Ho before exploring the delights of medieval Lijiang with the director of the local orchestra. Heading over Myanmar (Burma) to Nagaland in India he meets up with some reformed headhunters, before boarding the steam train to Tipong Coalmine. In one of the great tea estates of Assam he rides an elephant and learns that most of them have now been made redundant. On an island in the middle of the Brahmaputra he stays in a monastery where the monks love to dance dressed up as milkmaids and, as he approaches the border with Bhutan, he encounters one-horn rhinos and loses a tug of war with an elephant. Part 6 - Bhutan to Bay of Bengal In the remote kingdom of Bhutan, Michael finds himself back in the land of yaks for a last look at the high Himalaya. Trekking to Chomolhari Base Camp he meets a nomad with a penchant for yak songs, before heading down to Paro to witness the great Buddhist festival or Tsechu. In a bar in the capital, Thimphu, he discusses reincarnation and the pursuit of happiness with Benji and Khendum, two of the King's cousins, and en route to Bangladesh Benji takes him to see the extremely rare Black Neck Cranes. By contrast, Bangladesh, a country created by Himalayan mud, is the most densely populated country on Earth. On his journey south Michael visits the ship-breaking beaches of Chittagong and grid-locked Dhaka. He meets a man who made a fortune in Birmingham in the poultry business, and a woman who lends money, but only to women. On a 1920s paddle steamer he is serenaded with the words of Bengal's Shakespeare, and he completes his epic Himalayan journey aboard a fishing boat that carries him out into the Bay of Bengal and a westering sun.
